President Prabowo Calls for National Unity, Peaceful Expression Amid Unrest

Jakarta: President Prabowo Subianto delivered an official statement on Sunday, August 31, 2025, addressing the growing unrest marked by demonstrations and acts of anarchy in Jakarta and several regions across Indonesia. The press conference was held at the Presidential Palace on Jalan Medan Merdeka Utara, Jakarta.

Prabowo was accompanied by People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Ahmad Muzani, House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani, and leaders of coalition political parties represented in Parliament, as well as opposition leader and Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri.

One of the key points emphasized by Prabowo was the importance of safeguarding national unity and cohesion.

“Let us protect national unity. Indonesia is on the verge of a new rise. We must not allow ourselves to be divided,” Prabowo declared at the press conference.

The President underlined his respect for freedom of expression, stressing that the right to peaceful assembly must be upheld and protected.

“Express aspirations peacefully, without riots, without looting, without damaging public facilities. Destroying public facilities means wasting the people’s money,” he said.

Prabowo also warned citizens to remain vigilant against the interference of groups seeking to prevent Indonesia’s prosperity. He reiterated that the nation is striving toward progress and improvement.

“We are fixing shortcomings in government and the state. Our ancestors’ spirit was mutual cooperation. Let us work together to safeguard our communities, our families, and our country. We are always being tested. Do not let ourselves be divided,” Prabowo asserted.

The President confirmed he is closely monitoring developments in Jakarta and other cities. He instructed the police and armed forces to take firm action in accordance with the law, particularly against those responsible for vandalism, looting of private homes, and attacks on economic centers.

“To all citizens, please voice your genuine aspirations peacefully. We assure you they will be heard, recorded, and followed up,” Prabowo said.
