Jakarta: President Prabowo Subianto appeared dignified in traditional attire during the Proclamation Ceremony marking Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day at the Merdeka Palace in Central Jakarta on Sunday, August 17, 2025. Presidential Secretary Maj. Gen. Ariyo Windutomo revealed the identity of the outfit.

“Malay. I’m not an expert in traditional clothing, but it’s Malay, or something close to Malay. What matters is that it’s Indonesian,” Ariyo told reporters at the Merdeka Palace grounds.

Ariyo also noted that the president likely chose the ivory-white attire himself. “I believe he made the choice personally,” he said.

House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad confirmed the same. “It’s Malay,” he said briefly at the palace.

According to Metrotvnews journalist, the president wore a white suit paired with a peci cap and matching trousers. His appearance was further elevated by a golden-red diagonal sash and a simple yet meaningful jasmine garland necklace.

President Prabowo’s decision to wear traditional attire for the first time at the 80th Independence Day ceremony added solemnity to the state occasion. Beyond honoring local culture, the gesture also symbolized Indonesia’s unity in diversity.
