Jakarta: Indonesia and Russia’s 75-year-long relationship has been reaffirmed as one of Moscow’s key priorities in Southeast Asia. Russian Ambassador to Indonesia, Sergei Tolchenov, underlined that the two countries’ strategic partnership is more than a diplomatic symbol, but a concrete framework shaping future cooperation.

“The declaration signed by President (Vladimir) Putin and President Prabowo Subianto is not merely ceremonial. It serves as a foundation guiding us to expand collaboration in politics, economy, technology, and culture,” Tolchenov said at a press briefing at his residence in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

He highlighted the long-standing ties since 1950 as a strong basis for facing global challenges, describing Indonesia as a consistent and reliable partner in Moscow’s eyes.

To mark the 75th anniversary, Russia has prepared a series of cultural programs, including film festivals, art exhibitions, and artist exchanges. “We want people from both nations to know each other more closely. Relations are not only between governments, but also between people,” he said.

Tolchenov also emphasized the growing role of education, noting that hundreds of Indonesian students pursue studies in Russia every year, especially in science and technology. “We are proud that so many young Indonesians study at our universities. This is a long-term investment in our bilateral ties,” he added.

In the energy sector, he pointed to potential cooperation in civil nuclear energy through Rosatom. “Energy, technology, and innovation are bridges to the future for our young generations. Russia is ready to share its experience with Indonesia,” he said.

Despite global geopolitical challenges, Tolchenov stressed that Indonesia–Russia relations remain stable and continue to grow, reflected in intensive communication between high-ranking officials and recent official visits.

On the economic front, he mentioned progress in negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which is expected to bring significant benefits once concluded.

The ambassador closed his remarks with optimism, saying that the 75th anniversary momentum will strengthen the foundation for cooperation across multiple fields. “We stand at a crossroads of history, and we choose the path of cooperation, not confrontation,” he said.
