Jakarta: Bank Indonesia (BI) has firmly denied claims about the circulation of new rupiah banknotes issued to commemorate the 80th Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia, calling the information a hoax. BI confirmed that no new currency has been issued, contrary to reports circulating on social media.

In an official statement posted on its Instagram account, BI explained that the last issuance of rupiah banknotes was in 2022, while the most recent commemorative edition was released in 2020 to mark the 75th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence.

The central bank urged the public not to be easily swayed by unverified information and encouraged people to report if they encounter similar claims.

“Immediately report to Bank Indonesia if you receive suspicious information through the contact center at 131,” BI stated in its post. It added that complaints and information services are also available via WhatsApp at 081 131 131 131.

Monitor official channels to avoid scams

Through its statement, BI reminded the public to always verify information and rely only on Bank Indonesia’s official channels for updates regarding the rupiah and monetary policy.

Bank Indonesia also called on the public to remain vigilant against hoaxes, especially those related to currency, stressing that caution is essential to avoid potential losses or unwanted consequences from false information. (Muhammad Adyatma Damardjati)
