West Lampung: Hail accompanied by heavy rain, strong winds and lightning struck several areas of West Lampung Regency, Lampung Province, on Sunday, damaging houses and tearing off rooftops.

Resident Tiwi Azahra said the hail and strong winds struck suddenly, with gusts powerful enough to rip metal roofing sheets off several houses.

"This afternoon, around 4:30, there were strong winds along with heavy rain and hail. The wind was really strong, like a windstorm, and it blew the metal roofs off. There was also a brief power outage because of the lightning," Tiwi said in West Lampung, as quoted on Monday, November 2, 2026.

She said she panicked when she saw large amounts of hail falling around her house.

"I panicked because there was so much hail," she said.

The hail fell in Balik Bukit District at around 3:21 p.m. local time. The ice pellets, reportedly about the size of marbles, fell alongside heavy rain, strong winds and lightning.

The hailstorm lasted approximately 10 to 15 minutes, with hailstones seen falling on rooftops, yards and roads, catching residents by surprise.

At least six villages and urban wards were affected, including the villages, locally known as pekon, of Watas, Gunungsugih, Padang Dalom and Padang Hanakau, as well as the urban wards of Way Mengaku and Pasar Liwa.

In addition to the hail, strong winds damaged several houses. In Hanakau Village, some homes reportedly sustained severe damage after their roofs were blown away. Several rooftops and building pillars also collapsed.

Local officials and village authorities have begun recording the damage and identifying affected areas. Residents are also planning to work together to repair damaged houses.

Hail is a weather phenomenon that can occur in tropical regions when cumulonimbus clouds develop. Within these clouds, water droplets can freeze in the upper atmosphere before falling to the ground as ice.

Residents have been urged to remain alert to the possibility of extreme weather, including heavy rain and strong winds, which can damage buildings and cause trees to fall. (Yaumil Tianri Rahmi)
