Jakarta: The first group of Indonesian citizens evacuated from Iran arrived safely at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Tuesday afternoon (June 24).

A total of 11 individuals landed via a commercial flight from Istanbul after being evacuated by the Indonesian government through a land route from Tehran to Baku, Azerbaijan, along with 86 other citizens. The evacuation was prompted by escalating security threats in Iran following Israeli military attacks.

The evacuees were warmly received by representatives from several Indonesian government institutions, including the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs (Kemenko Polhukam), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and local provincial authorities.

“Meanwhile, another group of 18 Indonesian citizens, who were originally scheduled to arrive in Jakarta via Doha on the same day, faced delays due to airspace closures,” as stated from Foreign Ministry statement, Wednesday, 25 June 2025.

“Their flight was rerouted through Jeddah, and they are currently en route to Jakarta. Assistance and coordination are being handled by the Indonesian Embassy in Doha and the Consulate General in Jeddah,” added the statement.

An additional 68 Indonesian citizens remain in Baku, with the government actively working to arrange their return to Indonesia.

This evacuation effort was the result of coordinated actions between multiple parties, including the Directorate for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Indonesian Embassies in Tehran and Baku, the Indonesian military (TNI), and with the support of the Iranian and Azerbaijani governments. The evacuees traveled by land for approximately 16 hours from Tehran to Baku before continuing their journey home on commercial flights through various alternative routes.

The operation follows a directive from President Joko Widodo to prioritize the safety of Indonesian citizens abroad amid rising regional tensions.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that it will continue to monitor developments in the Middle East and strengthen the Crisis Response Team (CRT) both at headquarters and in overseas missions.

Indonesian citizens in affected areas are advised to stay alert, adhere to local authority guidelines, and promptly contact Indonesian representatives if they encounter difficulties.
